Tips For Getting Better Gas Mileage

It almost seems like gas prices won’t stop going up! In fact, many of us spend more on gas that on just about anything else, and we do not even receive any tangible benefits from it. At the same time, however, you cannot get your car anywhere without gas. While many newer cars are built to be more gas efficient, new cars cost lots of money. Instead of “I wonder what new car I’ll buy,” a bigger question for most people is, “What can I do to make sure I save money on gas with the car I already have?” You can get better gas mileage out of your car in a number of ways. Here are a few easy things you can start doing, and you will begin to see a difference.

One very easy thing you can do to get better gas mileage is this: keep your tires inflated to the proper weight. When your cars are running too flat, you are using up a lot of extra gas. Check the outside of your tires for the proper weight, and check nearby gas stations to find one where you can get air for free. It only takes a minute to make sure your tires are at the proper weight, and you will sure be happy that you did.

Being aware of your driving tendencies is another easy thing you can do. You will be surprised by what you find when you start to pay attention. For instance, many people start to realize that they press the gas pedal much harder than is necessary when leaving a red light or a stop sign. Instead of pressing down on the gas vigorously, ease your speed upward. Pressing the gas while approaching a red light or a stop is another thing people often start to realize that they do. Why force yourself to brake at the last minute by accelerating toward a red light! Coast toward a stop instead, and in this way save som gas.

Lastly, you should make sure your car is staying in good shape. If you have problems with your engine, it will suck up more of your gas. Change your oil regularly, and learn some simple things that you can check for in your engine on your own. With just a bit of regular maintenance, you can use a lot less gas.

Of course, it would be pretty simple if you could go out tomorrow and purchas a brand new, gas-efficient car! But until you can do that, you can do a few simple things to make sure you are getting the most out of the car you are driving for now.
