People who keep a bird feeder in their yard usually have a desire to tray to attract cardinals their way. In fact – due to the bright colors of the cardinal and the effortless beauty it exudes – most who end up with a cardinal coming their way consider the cardinal to be their prize possession. But while those who attract cardinals to their feeders enjoy them, many who have feeders are unable to figure out how to attract cardinals at all. Of course, a bit of luck is always involved in the sort of birds you will attract to your feeder, but if you follow these steps, you will have a much greater chance of attracting a cardinal.

One of the biggest considerations to keep in mind, of course, is that you need to give cardinals the sort of food they want. You might be tempted to get the cheapest “songbird blend” you can find, but you are unlikely to get many (if any!) birds this way. You should buy a bird seed blend that contains a large amount of black oil sunflower seeds, as these are favorites of all songbirds – including cardinals.

Another important consideration in trying to attract cardinals to your feeder will be the sort of feeder you are using in your efforts. Tube feeders are popular – and you may even have one in your own yard – as these attract many birds and are effective at keeping squirrels away. But if your goal is to attract a cardinal specifically, however, you should buy a feeder that is specifically designed to bring cardinals your way.

Another important part of attracting cardinals – and any birds, in fact – to your feeder will be having water nearby. If you provide a bird bath nearby, this will provide birds with the ability to drink water after eating, and to get clean as well.

Cardinals prefer to eat at feeders that are placed between four feet and six feet off the ground, prefarably with some form of protection (a tree or shrubs) close by. You should have no problem attracting cardinals to your feeder, once you put all these things together!
